Alternative Government

Sir, —With reference to your editorial “An alternative Government" (August 10), Tweedledum for Tweedledee is surely not an alternative? An alternative suggests a difference, at least a

difference of degree that shows a notable change, for the better. “What is the alternative?” seems more appropriate. Such a real alternative exists in the majority of the people being made accountable for government, rather than a minority representative party with absolute power over all our lives. Our method of election always pendulates between T and T. Change the method of election to one that encourages multi-party representation in government representing the democratic majority and we remove the dictatorship of the single party and its power of fragmentation. A proportional democratic government representing all the plural parts demands a change of political attitude, as in compromise and co-operation. Such an alternative change can only come about by the implementation of the Government’s proposal for a referendum to change the method of election. — Yours, etc., L. J. ROBINSON. August 10, 1988.
