Rare-books show seeks sponsorship
PA Wellington The Alexander Turnbull Library seeks sponsorship for an exhibition of some of the world’s rarest books, including the first Bible printed in Maori. The chief librarian, Mr Jim Traue, said that if a sponsor was not found, the exhibition, planned for 1990 or 1991, would not be held. It is expected to cost about $500,000, almost half of which has been raised. About 100 books would be on show, including some borrowed from the United States. Mr Traue recently visited major libraries in the United States and is
negotiating to borrow some of their rarest books. Among these are the first books printed in the West and an 1845 Bible. Mr Traue said some of the American libraries were most willing to lend books for the exhibition. A display of Bibles and prayer books is being held this week at the National Library in Wellington to coincide with Church and City Week. The exhibition includes more than 200 volumes printed from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century, including a facsimile of the Gutenberg Bible, gilded in 22-carat gold.
