Shanghai sizzles
NZPA-Reuter Peking Shanghai’s 12 million residents, sizzling in a record heat wave, have been told not to buy air conditioners because the city has not got enough electricity. The “Wen Hui Bao” newpaper said thousands of residents went without power for several days in one district when several rich residents switched on their air conditioners, causing a fire in the district’s power cable. At least 42 people have died and 773 have been
admitted to hospital in the heat wave in Shanghai. Temperatures up to 38.3 C have been recorded, the highest for 53 years. There are also water shortages. “Wen Hui Bao” said Shanghai was 400,000 kilowatts short of electricity this summer, with supply to domestic users already at capacity. In one street, when a man switched on his air conditioner neighbours’ refrigerators stopped working and their televisions went fuzzy.
