Dept in doldrums

PA Hamilton Conservation Department critics and exaggerated news media reports are destroying staff morale and confidence, says a senior departmental official.

The department’s eastern regional manager, Mr David Field, said funding cuts in this year’s budget were also causing staff to doubt the value of their work.

Mr Field said he was concerned about the news media picture of the department as a “touristdevelopment clobbering machine.” He said there had been undue concentration on one or two mining issues such as the decision to decline Spectrum Resources’ mining application in Coromandel.

Nationally more than 80 per cent of the mining applications since April had been approved.
