Losing spell broken
NZPA-AFP Washington Jimmy Connors yesterday ended a spell of nearly four years without a tournament triumph when he won the $U5415,000 ($NZ610,285) Washington Classic grand prix event. The 35-year-old top seed — spurred on by a partisan capacity crowd — brushed aside Ecuador's Andres Gomez, the No. 3 seed, 6-1, 6-4 in 69 minutes. It was the 106th win of Connors’ career.
