Roosevelt Raceway closes
Roosevelt Raceway, New York, where night trotting first began in 1940, has been closed after losses of SUS 7 million in the last four years. The closure was announced 12 days ago to take effect immediately, forcing the cancellation of 71 meetings per year.
Massive declines im attendances and dwindling support for harness racing in New York as it competes against the Meadowlands in New Jersey, were two of the main reasons for the closure. The course has been purchased for SUSSI.S million by New York in-
vestors, who have advised government authorities they intend developing the property commercially to repay existing debts. At this stage there are no immediate plans to evict the horsemen who utilise the 38 barns and 800-900 stables on the course.
