Time honours to Volant
Special correspondent Hastings
Seagers, a talented three-year-old, was among the stars of yesterday's Hastings trackwork when he hit .out strongly over 800 m on the No. 1 grass.
Fast work was done on the plough and wide out on the grass, both tracks providing heavy footing. Seagers (Frethey) covered 800 m on his own in 52.2, the last 600 m in 38.2. He has thrived since winning his debut at Hastings earlier this month and is likely to line up in a 1400 m race on the second day of the Hawke’s Bay-Dannevirke Hunt meeting on Saturday week.
Time honours for the morning went to Volant (McGifford) and Our Fair Lady (Binnie), which sped over 800 m on the No. 1 grass in 51.7, the last 600 m in 37.3. Volant is entered for the Gracelands Juvenile at Wanganui on Saturday but needs four scratchings to gain a start. He is a talented two-year-old by Fiesta Star.
Ripples (Binnie), another preparing for Wanganui on Saturday, was let off with an easy workout on her own, running her last 600 m in 41.4. She was not too far away when sixth over 1600 m at Matamata last start and deserves to win one after a
string of minor placings. Lucatreze (Frethey) had early use of the plough and ran a solo 600 m in 39.7. He will have his next start at Hastings next week.
Kit (Cullen) was slightly ahead of Going (Purdue) at the end of 800 m on the No. 1 grass in 52.8, the last 600 m in 39.25. Going is another being prepared for the Hawke’s Bay-Dan-nevirke Hunt meeting. Astigate (Murray) finished ahead of his stablemate, Capone (Gifford) at the end of 600 m on the No. 1 grass in 38.25. Astigate, a two-year-old by Gaiter, went a good race in his debut at Trentham recently.
