Senior rugby players want clearances
The numbers of Christchurch senior club rugby players wanting clearances to play overseas in the off season are not dwindling.
Two members of the Trust Bank Cup winning Shirley team, Wayne Steadman and Colin Williamson, have asked for clearances to play in Britain and Italy. The applications were accepted by the Canterbury Rugby Union’s management committee at its meeting last evening and will be sent to the New Zealand Union for final approval. The former Canterbury All Black, Craig Green, received a clearance to play in Italy from September 1 this year to May 1989. David Ellis, the High School Old Boys’ wing who played 10 times on the right wing for Canterbury last season, was regarded from senior to third grade. Ellis suffered a back injury early in the season and his wish to play rugby away from the rigours of senior and senior B level while testing his Jnjury
wasaccepted by the committee. A University B third grade player who was ordered from the field last Saturday did not appear before the judicial sub-committee and was stood down until he did so. The player’s name was Seve, but it did not indicate whether that was his Christian name or surname.
The Town XV to play North Canterbury A at Oxford on Sunday will be selected from: Paul Treves (University), Kieran Jones (University), Mark Carrington (New Brighton), Roger Kilpatrick (Christchurch), Steve Hansen (Marist), Kelly Hansen (Marist), Greg Coffey (Marist), Jamie Flynn (Sydenham), Ross Adler (New Brighton), John Cook (Sydenham, captain), Murray Henderson (Marist), Hamish Robinson (Old Boys), Gavin Hill (Shirley), Ralph Wallace (Old Boys), Tom Coughlan (Marist), Simon Foley (Burnside), Andrew Owen (Old Boys), Tala Kele (Marist), Robert Taeafu (Sydenham).
