British beaten
PA Auckland Auckland continued its winning record against touring rugby league sides when beating Great Britain, 30-14, at Carlaw park last evening. The Aucklanders scored five tries to two. While Auckland played with enthusiasm and was willing to chance its arm with some free running, the visitors lacked the sharpness and determination they had displayed at Christchurch in the test on Sunday. The Lions coach, Malcolm Riley, said his team had been weary. More important, he said, they had not taken their opportunities. Towards the
end the British halfback Andy Gregory, looked almost disinterested.
The player who kept his momentum throughout was the wing, Henderson Gill. To his credit Gill never let up and reaped the reward of two tries through powerful running. In both cases Gill burst through the tackle of Paddy Tuimavave.
Scorers: Auckland 30 (Kelly Shelford 2, Paddy Tuimavave, Peter Brown, Francis Leoto, tries; Peter Brown 2 conversions, penalty, Phil Bancroft 2 conversions) beat Britain 14 (Henderson Gill 2 tries, Paul Laughlin 2 penalties, conversion). Half-time 14-4. Crowd — 12,000.
