Chch boy in school debate for Aust.
A Shirley Boys’ High School pupil, Michael Macaskill, is a member of a team to represent New Zealand at the inaugural International Secondary Schools Debating Championship in Australia next month.
The team will be sponsored by Consultus New Zealand, Ltd, a Wellington communications company. Other team members will be Aaron Pedersen (Wanganui Collegiate) and Tanya Thompson (Wellington Girls’ College). A Canterbury team of Julian Rayner, Andrew Isaac, and Macaskill was runner-up in the final of the Consultus New Zealand Secondary Schools Debating Championship in Wellington yesterday.
Taranaki-Manawatu’s team of Mark Alderdice, Pedersen and Susan Hornsby won the Debating Council Trophy, arguing the negative of the motion
“That the media serve us well.”
The Governor-General, Sir Paul Reeves, presented the Debating Council Trophy to the winner at Parliament yesterday morning. He also presented the New Zealand Universities Trophy for the runner-up. Pedersen, who is team captain, also won the Consultus Cup for best speaker in the week-end New Zealand final.
The secondary school team will tour Australia for a fortnight in early August for a series of debates against teams from the United States, Canada, Britain, Hong Kong and Australia as part of Australia’s bicentennial celebrations.
The two teams contesting the grand final were selected from eight competing in the New Zealand final.
