Loan granted to refuge

The West Christchurch Women’s Refuge has been granted a loan by the Riccarton Borough Council to help overcome cash problems. The refuge needs money to pay staff wages because their annual grant from the Social Welfare Department, due this month, has been delayed. Riccarton’s Community Affairs Committee last evening approved a loan of $2OOO, without interest, and a further $2OOO dollars if needed, subject to some form of guarantee of repayment.

Scheme supported

The council has agreed to take part in the Local

Recreation and Sport Scheme organised by the Hillary Commission. The scheme provides a grant worth $1 for each person in the Borough to be allocated as subsidies, underwritings and loans to sport and recreation groups. Concerts A series of free lunchtime concerts, by students from the University School of Music, have begun in the Nelson Street Methodist Church hall. The next concert will be on July 22, at 1.15 p.m., and thereafter on the last Friday of each month until October.
