Mirror-framing factory closing

Smith and Smith Glass is closing the mirrorframing and fitting factory of William Thom, but relocating some of the business to its Oakley Glass business in Fitzgerald Avenue.

About 18 people are employed by William Thom. The southern regional manager for Smith and Smith Glass, Mr Doug Bennet, said as many as the staff as possible would be moved to the company’s other Christchurch plants.

In another restructuring move, Smith and Smith’s

Christchurch Autoglass outlet in St Asaph Street will be merged with Oakley Autoglass in Fitzgerald Avenue. The combined business will trade as Smith and Smith Glass. Mr Bennet said the decision to restructure the Christchurch business had been made to ensure the company was able to make the best use of its resources in a tight trading environment. The restructuring would not affect Smith and Smith’s other glass plants at Bromley, Southwark Street or Sockburn, he said.
