Huka Falls rescue

PA Rotorua A Whakatane woman plucked from the rapids below Huka Falls on Sunday, had jumped into the Waikato River about 50m upstream from the falls. Sergeant Neil Paterson of the Taupo police said a Feilding farmer saw the woman jump off the bank. The woman, aged 61, had left her jacket neatly folded on the bank and her shoes placed tidily nearby contained her car key wrapped in a handkerchief. The evidence left little doubt she had jumped rather than slipped into the river, he said.

She was plucked to safety by a jet boat operator, Mr Barry Marshall. Ten-year-old Hayden O’Connell, who was with him at the time, held the boat steady while the woman was pulled from the water.

The woman’s name is not being released but her condition was reported by a Taupo Hospital spokesperson as comfortable and improving.
