The Washdyke horseman, “Snooky” Cowan, ended a mixed day at the Timaru meeting last Friday facing a charge of dangerous riding which will be heard at Timaru on July 23.

Should Cowan be found guilty of the charge his riding opportunities over the Grand National meeting could be curtailed. Cowan, riding Free To Choose in the Coupland Steeplechase, has been charged with interfering with Yutani, ridden by Willie Harnett, with two fences to go in the race. The incident is not connected with Yutani’s fall at the last fence in'which Harnett was injured and taken to hospital. The hearing of the case was

delayed because Harnett was unable to attend and will be held before the South Canterbury Hunt meeting which starts on Saturday week.

This is the second occasion the Canterbury stipendiary steward, Bruce Craik, has preferred a serious riding charge in recent weeks. The other occasion was against Perry Thomas, riding Hurunui in the Jumpers’ Flat at Ashburton. Thomas was found guilty of hitting the winner Highland Peer with his stick in the straight. Thomas was charged with foul riding and fined $250 taking into account several factors brought forward in evidence.
