D.D.T. ban
Sir, —Mr Steve Henry, of Pesticides Action Network, has called for the banning of D.D.T. (June 14). By all means ban its manufacture and use everywhere, but do it for valid reasons. Mr Henry says D.D.T. is “... considered so toxic to humans ...” There is no direct evidence that D.D.T. is significantly toxic to humans, in spite of many documented cases of massive exposure. The evidence that D.D.T. is toxic to any mammals is far from convincing and results from rats being fed substantial proportions of their body weights of D.D.T. per day; an unrealistic test. There is, however, a very good reason for banning D.D.T. and that is its devastating effect on birds, particularly predatory birds, where it interferes with the laying down of eggshell, a biological process not present in humans. — Yours, etc. R. M. EMBERSON. June 15,
