Kim Philby
Sir,—Of course Philby was a traitor, deserving punishment. But, along with Burgess and Maclean, he was allowed to get away with it. Anthony Blunt lost his royal honours, and this, along with Lester Piggott’s disgrace for straying into the upper-class sport of tax evasion, shows how unfair the whole game is, for the Fijian traitors retain their knighthoods and the affection of Mrs Thatcher. People should be judged by what they do rather than what they are, and R. E. Lewis’s name-calling ignores the practical results achieved by Philby in scotching the C.I.A. nastiness in Albania and elsewhere. Churchill is believed by many to have arranged the assassination of General Sikorsky — not proven, but a most convenient end for that Polish troublemaker. As long as wars and terrorism are big business, we will have spying, with all its dirty tricks.—Yours, etc., VARIAN J. WILSON. June 13,1988.
