Air fares
Sir,—Les Bloxham (May 27) is very selective in starting his domestic air fares comparison from November, 1984 (there were no rises for two years prior to that point). But, even more interesting is the fact that his report that air fare increases are "desperately” needed obviously stems. from Ansett. It certainly did not emanate from Air New Zealand. Only Ansett said that air fare increases were justified. This from the Australian airline that said it was going to bring benefits to the consumer — quite clearly, these do not include price. Ansett is experiencing losses of considerable proportions, as predicted, but even if it were not, it has a record in Australia of highly inflated costplus pricing. Bad luck, this is New Zealand and the competition, Air New Zealand, is marketled. — Yours, etc., R.G. WALLACE, Manager, Domestic Passenger Market. June 10, 1988.
