Baby-death charge
PA Hamilton A Tauranga man, aged 34, appeared in the District Court at Hamilton yesterday charged with the murder of a baby girl, aged five months, at Matamata on Wednesday. The man appeared before Judge Twaddle in chambers and was remanded in custody to Kingseat Hospital to June 30 for a psychiatric assessment. Interim suppression of name was granted. No plea was entered, as the charge was laid indictably. The baby, Madeline Mary Bates, was being cared for by her grandparents while her parents were on holiday in Melbourne.
