‘Stab in the Dark’

“A Stab in the Dark,” presented by Musoc at the Ngaio Marsh Theatre, Junk 16, at 8 p.m. Directed by Guy Ockenden, musical direction by Sue Eason, and produced by Andrew Glennie. Reviewed by Mike O’Brien.

Not often is an audience outnumbered by the cast. Admittedly, this cast of more than 40 is a large , one but they really deserve greater numerical support for their enthusiasm and skills. This is a fun production shamelessly melodramatic. It is a grand opportunity to go completely "over the top” and Musoc relishes the occasion. It is a merry and sportive romp through anachronisms, colloquialisms and sinking puns, and.it whips along at a sparkling pace. One of the best features of this production is the strong list,of principals ledfoy David Round as tpe mercurial, daWyish Envoy. He cleverly exploits the

comic potential of the foppish sleuth. Susie Bridger has the odd vocal indelicacy but she plays the scheming and seductive Vittoria with confidence. Jonathan Densem displays poise and projection as the brilliantined Prior and Louise Maher is irrepressible as the lisping Abbess without abstinence. Grant Moulin is a perfect choice for the gruff swashbuckler, the “much travelled” pirate chief. The large and vocal chorus gives excellent support. Picture a brace of quaffing nuns, some hunks of monks and a band of voluble pirates — all thoroughly immersed in the mayhem — and you have some idea of the bustling life, colour and fun. It is good to see this wide stage exploited to the full with movement and good grouping. Indeed, all elements of production are professionally presented. Musoc deserves moiy support for its efforts.
