Southland double looks likely at Nelson

Southland stables and reinsman Allan Beck have a fine chance of taking out the T.A.B. double at the Nelson Trotting Club’s meeting at Richmond tomorrow with Scottish Sailor and Tact Tar.

Scottish Sailor, a useful staying son of the Meadow Skipper horse, Midshipman, accounted for a C2 field at Ashburton on June 6 with authority and tomorrow’s line-up in the Caltex Gold Cup looks no stronger. A stablemate of tight-class pacer, Microscopic, in Graeme Bond’s Winton team, Scottish Sailor was checked early at Ashburton, moved up in the middle stages and beat Colonel Poplar by half a length, pacing the 2400 m mobile in 3:4.2. The five-year-old earlier showed his toughness at Addington in February defeating a fresh Kiwi Supreme in a

smart 3:20.68 over 2600 m mobile. Brandy And Dry capitalised on a good run handy to the leaders to beat Avian Boy quite comfortably at Timaru on May 21 in 3:26.3 for 2600 m (stand). The three-year-old son of Clever Innocence and Transglo has not raced since but trainer Jack Smolensk! also produced him fresh for that success and he remains one of the leading fancies for this. Twilight Time, a surprise favourite at Rangiora last Saturday, is. an obvious danger after beating all but Watbro Earl in the corresponding event at Rangiora last Saturday. That was the Montini Bromac gelding’s second run back from a lengthy spell and he should be further improved as a result of that outing. Von Luckner and Beaudiene Bolta, third and fourth respectively behind Watbro Earl and Twilight Time at Rangiora, are racing well and should be close up again.,
