Shock defeat of favourite at Ascot

NZPA-Reuter Ascot (England) The English filly, Magic Of Life, upset the previously unbeaten French favourite, Ravinella, with a storming win in the Coronation Stakes on the second day of Royal Ascot. Ridden by Pat Eddery, Magic Of Life belied her generous 16-1 starting price as she swept; through from the back of the field in the straight to win the five-furlong Group 1 race by two lengths from Inchmurrin, another English filly. Ravinella, the 4-6 favourite and unbeaten in six races, was a further four lengths back in third place. But •'■jockey, Gary Moore,? had no excuses for the French horse. "She was just not good enough. We were beaten on the day by a better filly,” he said. It was sweet revenge for owner, Stavros Niarchos, and trainer, Jeremy Tree, after the defeat of Magic Of Life by Ravinella in the recent English One Thousand Guineas. The day after that race, Magic of Life was discovered to have been suffering a lung infection.
