About face, say dam strikers
By GLEN PERKINSON Striking Clyde dam workers have accused their German-New Zealand employers of an “about face” after confusion over eviction notices served on 100 men living in the site camp.
The combined site union yesterday withdrew a Labour Court injunction against the ZublinWilliamson joint venture. The injunction was filed to stop the company evicting single men from the site camp. About 500 joint-venture workers have been on strike over pay and conditions for 14 weeks.
However, Mr Murray Williamson, a director of Williamson Construction Company, Ltd, said the eviction notices had not been withdrawn. The joint venture would enforce them on Tuesday. The union’s advocate, Mr Calvin Fisher, said the injunction was withdrawn after a telephone call from the joint-venture’s solicitor informing the! union the eviction notices would be withdrawn. Mr Fisher said the company had done an "about face.” The site union would seek another injunction if the notices were still in force.
