Chch soccer striker may need knee surgery

By

GARY BIRKETT

The Christchurch national league soccer striker, Allan Carville, may have to undergo an operation on his left knee after suffering an injury nine days ago. Carville, who was forced to miss Christchurch’s 8-0 drubbing of Miramar on Sunday, is to have an X-ray today and should an operation be required he will go under the knife immediately. Carville said he had a cartilage

operation six years ago on the same knee and it was thought a loose bit of cartilage had caused swelling’ after he took a knock against Mount Maunganui. The injury is not thought to be serious and the talented goal poacher hopes to be back playing in three weeks even if an operation is required. Carville delayed an overseas trip to play for Christchurch this season and is disappointed. to suffer an injury. 4 . “If it had happened at the start of

the season I would have been off overseas.” Carville admitted he found it frustrating watching from the stands as Christchurch demolished Miramar. His replacement, Steve Sumner, scored five goals. Sumner’s haul took him to fourth equal place on the national league goal scoring charts. The leading goal scorers after eight rounds are:— Dave Witteveen (Mount Wellington) nine; Nigel De-

benham (Mount Wellington) and Keith Braithwaite (Christchurch) both eight; Greg Little (Mount Maunganui) and Sumner both six; Tony Ferris (Mount Wellington) five; Greg Fleming (Wellington United), Bruce Snowden (Wellington), Gary Park (Napier), Sean Moloney (North Shore), Billy Wright (Mount Wellington) all four. Braithwaite’s tally includes four penalties and has given him the ideal start to try and beat his 20 goal total of last season, when he won the “Golden Boot” award for

vthe league’s top scorer. The, former Wigan professional has scored 13 goals in pre-season and Chatham Cup matches, giving him a grand total of 21 goals in 20 games so far this season. He holds the league record of six goals in one match, scored against Manawatu United last season. Sumner’s five goals on Sunday placed him equal second on the record list, along with Earle Thomas, of Mount Wellington, who scored five times, against Western Suburbs in 1971.
