Baker wins event
The top women’s triathlete, Erin Baker, of Christchurch, trounced all opposition in the women’s section of the Daikyo triathlon in Brisbane yesterday to win with 20min separating her from the second and third placegetters, twiqs, Patricia and Sylviane Puntous. Over all she was eighteenth and was the second New Zealander home. Her time of 6hr 50min was only one minute faster than the third New Zealander home, Brent Snellex (Christchurch). He was ninteenth over all. The first New Zealander to cross the line was Brett Marshall (Auckland). He was fourteenth over all and completed the 3km swim, 130 km cycle and 30km run in 6hr 42min. Mark Allen, of the United States, won the event in 6hr 6min from countryman Scott Tinley. Ken Glah (Australia) was third and Rob Barel (the Netherlands) fourth. Other New Zealanders to finish were Bruce Baxter (Christchurch) 23, Ross Forbes (Canterbury) 87, and John Lewis (Canterbury) 95.
