Christchurch will be well represented at the ordination of) New Zealand’s first Catholic Maori bishop, the Rev. Takuira Mariu, ! at Tokoroa tomorrow. ! The Catholic Bishop of Christchurch, ! the Most Rev. Basil Meeking, will attend the ordination with other New j Zealand bishops and ibishops from Pacific and j Australian diocese. [
A busload of people from the i Christchurch Catholic marae, Te Rangimarie, also left yesterday for theceremony on the Papa O Te Aroha marae at Tokoroa. j Father Mariu, aged 35, who was appointed bishop by Pope John Paul II in February, will be auxili-
ary to the Bishop of Hamilton, the Most Rev. Edward Gaines. His appointment is the culmination of seven years work by the New Zealand Catholic Maori body, Te Runanga 0 Te Hahi Katorika Aotearoa, and the New Zealand bishop’s conference. About 45,000 Catholic Maori people, including 11 Maori priests, live in New Zealand. Father Mariu was born in Taumarunui. He is a nephew of Sir Hepi Te Heu Heu, paramount chief of the Ngati Tuwharetoa.
Tomorrow’s ordination ceremony will include a traditional Maori welcome to the marae at Tokoroa, where the Bishop-elect is expected to be based.
