Civil defence staff collate information

PA New Plymouth Civil Defence personnel have begun the long task of collating information on damage caused by the storm in northern and coastal Taranaki. The information was required to ensure all those who need help receive it, said the'regional Civil Defence officer, Mrs Bev Raine.

Although the emergency throughout north Taranaki was scaled down as strong winds abated.

there was still a large force of workers and volunteers in the field. "We are now in the recovery phase,” she said. When the emergency was reduced, Civil Defence authorities immediately put teams throughout New Plymouth to survey citizens’ needs. They were asking people how the emergency affected them and if any damage had been assessed by insurance companies and whether

welfare assistance was required. Mrs Raine said collating information would take about three weeks. After that formal debriefing procedures, will begin. New Plymouth's Mayor, Mr David Lean, asked the Taranaki Catchment Commission to make a formal approach to the Government for directi financial assistance for removal of trees and debris from streams I and rivers in north Taranaki.
