The first New Zealand rider to reach the final of the world ice racing championship, Bruce Cribb, leads from the defending world champion, Jiri Ivanov, of the Soviet Union, in a semi-final of the world event at Assen in the Netherlands. Cribb finished fourteenth in the final at Eindhoven, the Netherlands. Known as Mannfreschen (maneater) in Europe, Cribb, aged 41, represented Britain, where he now lives, in the championship. He is a former New Zealand champion speedway rider and has represented New Zealand many times in speedway at test level.
