Dog registration
Sir, —Regarding comments of M. A. Hogan (February 22), the responsible dog owner has, I agree, fqr years paid for the upkeep of the dog control system. Recently the Christchurch City. Council has moved to collect from rates the $57,000 deficit in running the pound. This is a.step towards acceptance that the dog control problem is of man’s making, not the dogs’. Dogwatch will not stand by and allow unwanted dogs to be destroyed and, until the law changes it has been calling for are passed, it continues to rescue and house these dogs. I urge a reduction in population, urgently, by these humane means: Compulsory spaying of bitches (only approved owners breeding limited litters, with proven, responsible owners with controlled bitches in season, by alternatives, be exempted); neutering of problem males (proven roamers, prone to seeking bitches in season); licensing of owners and more authority for councils to move on all-too-prevalent. cases of cruelty and neglect. — Yours, etc.,
GERARDINE RYAN March 11, 1988.
