Linwood cemetery
Sir, —February has not been a month of rainy days, but is there a drastic shortage of water ;in Christchurch? Today on a visit to the Linwood Crematorium Cemetery I was appalled by the dreary appearance of the older section iof the cemetery. No green grass, dying rose bushes, which cost relatives of the dead money to replace, iand a general dried up, dusty view. Is there a staff shortage, has the watering system ceased or seized up? As a concerned citizen of Christchurch | with | close relatives buried in these grounds, I would be interested to know why these conditions exist. — Yours, etc., N. L. FLOWERS. March 3, 1988. '
[The managing director of the Cremation Society of Canterbury, Ltd, Mr-L. T. Jones, replies: "We agree that at the: time of your correspondent writing we were in a drought situation and, although jwe were watering as much as it was possible, we were inevitably having problems in certain areas with the loss of some old rose trees, although very few. The. new area of gardens has eliminated this problem in that the rose and rockery sections are easily watered and maintained.’’]
