Street-improvement plans

Proposals for improvements to three main city streets were approved by the Christchurch City Council’s works and traffic committee yesterday. The streets are Fitzgerald Avenue, Linwood Avenue and McCormacks Bay Road where it joins the Causeway. Fitzgerald Avenue’s upgrading will be completed by the reconstruction of the section between Worcester Street and Kilmore Street. The committee approved the following

changes as part of that reconstruction: • A right-turn bay in the median on the northern approach to Worcester Street. • Right-turn bays in the median on the approaches to Gloucester Street. • Traffic signals at the intersection with Armagh Street with full turning facilities. • Closing the median at Chester Street. • Consideration of a right-turn bay at Kilmore Street later. The proposal for Lin-

wood Avenue between Aidwins Road and Hargood Street is a four-lane road. The three-stage plan for the conversion outline is aimed at coping with the traffic on the road since the opening of the Linwood City Mall and McDonald’s. The first stage involves signals at the Hargood Street intersection in the 1988-89 year. The second stage involves installing Tour lanes from Buckleys Road to Hay Street. Eastbound traffic would merge into

one lane between Thomas Street and Hay Street. Westbound traffic would diverge via a (temporary link road through themedian. I i The third stage will continue the four lanes to the Hargood Street intersection. ! The committee approved the scheme for discussions with local residents. The work on McCormacks Bay Road would relocate the road to avoid any filling of the bay. The road would be realigned where it meets the Cause-

way to create a safer turn. The scheme would cost about $140,000. The carriageway provided would be wide enough to allow a future cycleway alongside the Causeway. Some parking, planting and a footpath are also provided at the intersection. The scheme, one of four options, was approved by the committee and recommended fbr inclusion in the 1988-89 works programme. Residents will be sent a copy of the proposal.
