Rotarians hold crime conference
Rotary Club members concerned about the increase in crime and violence in New Zealand will meet at Methven this week-end. With “Peace in our community," as the central theme, the conference will address the difficulties and possible solutions of crime, why it occurs, who (commits it, and how to control it.
The direction of education and its responsibility for establishing behavioural patterns will be a central point' for discussion, as well as the family unit. ■
Each topic will be led by a key speaker. The speakers are the Christchurch regional police commander, ( Mr Emmet Mitten; the principal of Auckland Grammar School, Mr John Graham; and an Otago University lecturer in (the development of young children and the influence of ex-
perience in their development, Mrs Anne Smith. Rotary Clubs in the South Island north of the Rangitita River are also raising $300,000 towards Rotary International’s first world-wide project — the immunising by 1990 of the world’s children against poliomyelitis, measles, diptheria, tuberculosis, whooping cough and tetanus.
Polio Plus is a joint effort between Rotary International, the World Health Organisation, and the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund, with a target of SUSI2O million. New Zealand Rotary Clubs will contribute $2 million to Polio Plus. Rotary also has a team of experts available to help plan and implement immunisation programmes and to provide technical advice, manpower, and resources locally.
