Strong Tasman cricket team
Dave Guthardt, the Nelson and Central Districts wicketkeeper, will lead the Tasman XI which plays a Canterbury cricket team at Westport on February 28. Guthardt made his highest first-class score of 82 not out against Canterbury in the Shell Trophy match at Blenheim earlier this year. The Tasman XI has been drawn from Nelson, Marlborough, West Coast, Buller and North Canterbury. Among the seam bowlers are the former international, Gary Robertson, and a past Canterbury representative, Steve McNally. The match will be part of a busy week-end in Westport. A race meeting will be held the previous day, and there is also a convention of representatives of towns named Westport from throughout the world. In addition to promoting cricket in the Buller area, the
game will acknowledge the contribution by Telecom towards the installation of five artificial pitches in the province. The feature match will be played on such a pitch at Victoria Square. Officials have already noted an improvement, both in the standard of play and in combating poor weather conditions. The Tasman XI is:— Dave Guthardt (Nelson, captain), Mike Johnston (North Canter-, bury), lan Stark (Marlborough), Gavin Mcßae (Marlborough), Craig Ingham (Nelson), Russell Drake (West Coast), Gary Robertson (Nelson), Gary Walton (Nelson), Gary Chamberlain (North Canterbury), Steve McNally (North Canterbury), Gerard O’Connor (Buller).
