Prices level off at Hawarden fair

The continual rise of prices at recent North Canterbury ewe fairs began to level off yesterday at Hawarden. Prices stabilised at levels which seemed reasonable and made most vendors and buyers, happy. The top lines of two-tooths were in excellent condition. In spite of the settling trend of the day, the sale still produced spectacular prices. The highest was $51.25 for 81 Corriedales from the Estate Frank Forrester, Heatherdale.

As well as gaining the highest price, the pen also won two awards — the Clifton Cup, as being judged the best and most even-woolled pen of 80 or more, sheep, and a new trophy given by Mr Forrester’s widow. Mrs Ellen Forrester had given the trophy in memory of her husband to be awarded each year to the highest-priced pen of the sale. Mr Forrester had sold sheep at the Hawarden ewe fair for almost 50 years.

Mr Forrester had been awarded the Clifton Cup last year and had gained the highest price of $48.25. The next-best price was $45 for 93 Corriedales from E. J. Millar and Company, Allandale. The company gained the second-highest price last year of $39.75. The thirdhighest price of $38.50 was also reached by E. J. Millar and Company.

the second-highest price last year of $39.75. The thirdhighest price of $38.50 was also reached by E. J. Millar and Company. Several vendors made $37 or more for two-tooths, including the Estate Frank Forrester, R. J. and R. L. Warwick, Glendochart, V. B. Jensen, Parkview, Timpendean Farm, Waikari, and D. R. Fraser, Mount Benger. Timpendean Farm gained this year’s top price for adult ewes, being paid $33 for 340 five-year Corriedales. This price was $3 more than last year’s top price, also reached by Timpendean Farm. L. R. and L. J. Forrester, Karetu Downs, made $2B for 335 five-year Corriedales and J. K. Forrester, Black Hills, made $27.50 for 246 five-year Corriedales. The yarding contained 8024 adult ewes (7197 last year) and 4496 two-tooths (6626), as
