Gymnastic teams named
The New Zealand Gymnastic Association has named several rhythmic sportive gymnastic teams for competitions in the next four months, both in New Zealand and overseas.
In April and May, a team of three gymnasts will compete in a series of top events in Europe. The three chosen are Katie Agnew and Tracy Anderson, both of Auckland, and Katherine Hughes, of Christchurch.
The events they will attend are in Portiinaro, Portugal, from April 7 to 11; Karlsruhe, West Germany, April 15 to 17; the Alex Vogal tournament, in Beekbergen, the Netherlands, from April 20 to 25; the Medico Cup, Austria, from April 29 to May 1. A second team comprising Melanie Cairns (Waikato) and Raewyn Jack and Angela Walker (both Auckland) will compete in an international meeting in Corbeil-Essonnes, France, from May 13 to 15.
Walker, New Zealand’s top rhythmic gymnast, has been invited to compete in the prestigious Brother Cup competition in Tokyo from May 26 to June 2. The national champions of 19 countries have been invited to this championship. Cairns, Jack and Walker will also compete in the Four Continents championship in
Toronto from June 9 to 12. This competition involves all countries outside Europe. Hughes is a travelling reserve for development purposes only, and Agnew a nontravelling reserve who will replace a team. member should one withdraw.
A junior team will also compete in Toronto. The team members are Rochelle Crocker (Wellington), and Chloe Heffernan and Simone Parker (Auckland). Lisa Dorreen (Auckland) is a travelling reserve. On June 17 and 18, the Oceania Cup will be held in Auckland. New Zealand gymnasts hold three of the four trophies at stake in this competition, which involves nations throughout the Oceania region. This year, the team hopes to make a clean sweep of the trophies in the biennial competition. The New Zealand team is: Senior: Individuals: Katie Agnew, Tracey Anderson, Raewyn Jack, Angela Walker (Auckland); Melanie Cairns (Waikato); Katherine Hughes (Canterbury). Group: Tristan Apse, Julie Colvin, Jaana Haaja, Trudy Haugh, Rebecca Sue, Julie Williamson (all Canterbury). Rachel Benseman, Anne Brighouse, Jackie Comber, Tiffany Duncan, Julie Griffiths, Alison Storey, Marie Wilson (all Auckland). Junior: Individuals: Hannah Clark (Otago); Rochelle Crocker, Rebecca Smith (Wellington); Lisa Dorreen, Chloe Heffernan, Simone Parker (Auckland). Reserve: Rachel Iraia (Auckland). Group: Lisa Grant, Tipi Harris, Kim Knap, Sizanne Mavoa, Marion Maesbauer, Whetu Nathan, Janine Shaw (all Auckland), Andree Colvin, Amanda Horgan, Nikki Morse, Raewyn Pelham, Zana Perry, Selena Stewart (all Canterbury), Amanda Lowe (Nelson).
