Northerners top shots
In spite of solid scoring by two Christchurch marksmen, lan Pottinger and Tony Burgess, the North Island gained a handsome victory over the South in the annual inter-island smallbore rifle shoot at McLeans Island yesterday. North won by 61 points — 11,806 in aggregate for the 20-man team to the South’s total of 11,745 —
with Auckland’s 'Steve Petterson emerging as high gun with his tally of 598 points. Pottinger scored 596 and Burgess 595 for the South.
The main individual event, the 50m shoot, will start today and continue tomorrow, leading up to the Oceania championships in several shooting disciplines starting on Friday.
