Sunk boat towed ashore
A Magnum 5 metre outboard-powered runabout had to be towed to shore by the Canterbury Volunteer Coastguard yesterday after it sank off the Magazine Bay marina breakwater. The coastguard president, Mr Garry Freeman, said the incident happened about 1.30 p.m., when the sole occupant of the runabout cut the engine because the stern of the vessel appeared to be riding low in the _ ....
water. When he stopped, the following wave swamped the boat, causing it to sink. The vessel was towed to Naval Point by the coastguard vessel Red Pepper. Mr Freeman said the boat’s owner was safe and well, although a little upset at the fate of his boat. Earlier in the day another runabout was towed from Cashin Quay to Naval Point after its motor failed.
