Man arrested after youth stripped, beaten
A youth was beaten about the head in the back yard of a Sydenham property after being tied and partly stripped, the police said yesterday. The youth, aged 16, was left lying in the sun on Saturday afternoon for more than four hours. He suffered bad sunburn. Detective Sergeant Dave Landreth said that the youth had gone to a Sydenham house about 1.30 p.m. to retrieve some property left there. He argued with a man, aged 24, at the address and was then allegedly assaulted in the back
yard. The youth told the police he was stripped of most of his clothing and that his legs were tied with his belt.
The police said he was punched and kicked about the head several times while he was bound, suffering bad bruising. “He was let go about 6 p.m. and got himself home.”
A friend or relative took him to Christchurch Hospital, where he was admitted overnight. The youth was discharged yesterday morning and went to the Cen-
tral Police Station, where he was interviewed.
The police subsequently interviewed the man, aged 24, and arrested both.
The youth will appear in the Children and Young Persons Court on Wednesday charged with possessing an offensive weapon, a replica firearm, while intending to commit a crime.
The man will appear in the District Court today charged with unlawfully detaining the youth, aggravated wounding and theft.
