Govt sets up advisory committee
PA Wellington The Government has set up a steering committee to advise it on a programme for turning the Government Printing Office into a State-owned Enterprise. Mr Rob Campbell will chair the committee, and other members will be Mr Craig Taylor, a director of Jarden and Company, sharebrokers, Mr Rex Ward, the Government Printer, and a representative each from the Treasury and the State Services Commission. The group will examine possible organisational forms and ownership structures of the office,
work out a preferred way of turning it into an S.O.E. and report to the Minister of S.O.E.S, Mr Prebble and the Minister of Finance, Mr Douglas, by March 31. The Printing Office began with legislative printing in 1865 and later became the main printer and supplier of stationery for all government departments, Mr Prebble said. Over the last decade it had been financially restructured along the lines of a private company, having to pay dividends and taxes and commercial rates of interest on borrowing.
