Severance pay ‘unsatisfactory’
A union picket has been mounted outside Wainoni Timbers, Ltd, in Wainoni Road, over what the Timber Workers’ Union considers is an unsatisfactory severance pay offer for seven workers. Mr Don Smith, the union’s Canterbury branch secretary, said that the firm was shutting down, and all seven of its wage workers were due to lose their jobs today. He said that they had a combined total of about 90 years service to the firm, but were being offered only two weeks pay each for those without jobs to go to, and one week’s pay for those with jobs lined up or who were
old enough to retire.. Their award has no redundancy formula, only a requirement to give four weeks notice and to enter into negotiation. Negotiations had been “stumbling on” for some time, said Mr Smith. The picket was mounted earlier this week, and the company had responded by locking the gates, he said. Mr Smith expected salaried staff to try to load out remaining stocks from the site next week, but he said the pickets would stay on in an attempt to prevent that. The firm’s management could not be reached last evening for comment.
