Yoga flexible enough for all

Yoga is an “art of relaxation,” suitable for everyone from school age to over 70, says Mrs Pauline Good, a Christchurch yoga teacher. Mrs Good has just returned from an International Yoga Teachers’ Convention in Wellington, conducted by two Australian teachers, and attended by about 100 yoga teachers from throughout New Zealand. Laughter and correct breathing were emphasised at the conference as the path to good health, said Mrs Good. More and more people were taking up yoga because it helped control stress, or because it was a form of exercise that everyone could do at their own level, Mrs Good said. She supports moves to include yoga in schools, which is being investigated by the Health and Education departments. The classes, now held at university, and in some schools, were very popular, she said. A typical hatha yoga class includes flexibility, and stretching exercises and positive thinking and relaxation. Mrs Good, aged 60, has been teaching yoga for 25 years, and plans to continue yoga until she is 80.4 r
