Breeders’ Stakes may prove worthwhile consolation

By

DAVID McCARTHY

While much of the attention of the racing public will be turned toward Trentham tomorrow as the domination of the major cups this season by mares seems set to continue, two which did not meet with a great deal of fortune in the big staying races to date will be leading contenders for a worthwhile consolation prize, the South Island Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes, at Riccarton. Beks and Eye Full both tried the 3200 m handicaps earlier on and both come into tomorrow’s 1800 m feature at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting fresh from those endeavours. In both cases too the luck should be better tomorrow than yesterday. Beks had a rewarding spring winning twice at Riccarton and racing boldly when taken north. But her form deserted her in the DB Auckland Cup after which she was put aside. She has recovered quickly and having won five races on this track, including one at tomorrow’s distance and two others this season at 2000 m, a sprightly showing should see the In the Purple mare right in the finish. Eye Full was only eighth in the New Zealand Cup but the versatile mare did not disappoint Mick Murfitt who felt she would have got some of the stake with more luck in the running. Eye Full is nothing if not adaptable. Before the Riccarton feature she had won the North Canterbury Cup at 1600 m, the Banks Peninsula Cup at 2000 m, and been a bold second in the Classique Cottages Stakes at 1400 m. She rarely goes anything but well fresh and, especially, fresh at Riccarton. Older horses dominate the list of

winners of the Breeders since its inception several years ago and New Wine and Connie Lawn will also be in some favour. New Wine had a disappointing spring but wouldn’t be the first mare with that experience. She ran an improved fourth in the Timaru Cup and while off the scene since then is clean winded and comes up quickly. Her best efforts last season were at 1600 m and a peak run from her present place in the weights would make her a significant factor in this. Connie Lawn won this race last year and while this field may be somewhat stronger she is entitled to the greatest respect. She did not get the best of runs when failing last time out at Invercargill but previous to that had been racing well, with back-to-back wins on the same track. Taciturn will be trying to break the stranglehold mares have had over fillies in this race. The Noble Bijou mare showed great improvement late in the spring and then took out the Dunedin Guineas .before an uncharacteristic failure in the Cadbury Blue Riband at Waikouaiti. Since then she has trained well and, with a good pull in the weights over the mares, should make her presence felt. Impound, on her best form, could also be worth considering, her last failure being out of character. Matthew Sage, a youngster on the way up, could be the best of an even lot in the second leg The Dallington though Alicia, Destemido, Morning Wings, Regal Bay, Shine in Chine and Sun Pal are among the many which rate as winning chances.

Jamieson 51.5 Finished on well in the Timaru Cup in first show of form since the spring. Top rated filly in the south last season and must be considered from her place in the weights. 8 5116 Taciturn 2 R. McAra 51.5 Impressive winner of the Dunedin Guineas in December and smart trialist last week. Not set an easy task here but has plenty of talent. 9 1020 Impound 8 P. Richards 51.0 Never in contention after becoming “wrong footed” at Hokitika earlier this month, after smart run in C2 company at Rangiora. Place hopes preferred. 10 6755 Allez Cheval 1 J. Cameron 50.5 Useful recent form but not in this class. Others preferred. 11 5620 Ysatis 7 J. Woledge 50.5 Carried Ikg more into fifth place in this last year but form in interim mixed. Good effort at Greymouth last start and missed, kick badly at Rangiora before then. Win chance. 5 6809 Hokey Pokey 16 55.0 Form over-all a disappointment and would need to improve. 6 032 Knightstalker 15 R. Will like big track and win chance. 10 1 Meet Miss 17 J. Dowling 55.0 Won maiden over 1200 m at Rangiora in the manner of a horse which will prefer more ground. Draw no help. 11 0145 Morning Wings 9 55.0 Won maiden in the spring in the style of a filly going places. Rarely goes a bad one here. 14 0567 Serenity 3 55.0 Disappointing efforts since coming south in the spring. 15 2318 Shine and Chine 8 55.0 Maiden winner over 1100 m at Kumara but had rocky run next time out at Omoto. Capable mare which goes well here. 16 2172 Silver Jug 5 55.0 Bold effort at Reefton latest in a run of consistent form since maiden win at Waikouaiti. Not the worst, 17 0349 Sun Pal 10 55.0 Disappointing effort at Omoto but before that good fourth in Fay Richwhite Handicap at Kurow in useful company. Might surprise. 18 5Up the Sleeve 6 L.
