Logistical shines in training
Special correspondent Woodville The New Zealand Oaks runner, Logistical, overshadowed all others at Woodville yesterday morning when she ran an outstanding final trial. Although not as wellperformed as some others, Logistical is muchimproved and is a strong chance in tomorrow’s feature. Two starts back she was an unlucky third to subsequent St Leger winner, Mr Bunnythorpe, and she turned in another fine run when second at Trentham on Monday. Maurice Campbell rides her tomorrow. Fast work took place on the plough, which was in good order. Logistical ran 1400 m in 1:28.4, the last 1200 m in 1:13.7. She was helped over the last 800 m by Hibiscay and they sprinted the last 600 m in 35.65. Rival Oaks candidate, Amalass, went with Nymphe Noire over 1400 m in 1:28.8, the 1200 m in 1:14.5 and the last 600 m in 36.85. Nymphe Noire appeared to be travelling better at the finish, though Amalass is a lazy worker. Amalass has no middledistance form and must be taken on trust over 2400 metres tomorrow. Noel Harris rides her.
Nymphe Noire was a late entrant for the Foster’s Wellington Cup and with her light weight could take some of the stake. She made ground well for third to Dark Moments and Empire Rose last Monday. Bashful Lad completed 800 m in 50.45, the final 600 m in 37.2. He looks a fine chance to complete a double for the meeting in the Stars Travel Handicap, although there is a chance he won’t run. The Jarden Mile acceptors, Star Pride and Phareef, had an even gallop over 1200 m in 1:14, the last 600 m in 37. Lance O’Sullivan has his first ride on Star Pride tomorrow, the mare having shown something like her best form in her latest two starts. Phareef, for which no rider has been confirmed, would appreciate rain to ease the track. He has a good record over the distance at Trentham, but deserves to be at good odds.
