Eye Full looks good for Breeders’ Stakes tomorrow

By

DAVID McCARTHY

The pre-post favourite, Beks, did her prospects for the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes at Riccarton tomorrow little harm with a bold workout yesterday while race rival, Eye Full, came further into calculations with a gallop rather more impressive than the sectional times may suggest. She worked early in what turned out to be the busiest session at Riccarton for many a long day as Riccarton-trained horses wind up again after a brief break since holiday racing. Eye Full built up steadily from the 1200 m, with Barry Miles up, in company with Big Chance (Jody Woledge) and the pair came in from the 600 m in 395. That in itself was not a notable feat but the way Eye Full gave her stablemate weight and a comfortable beating suggests the versatile Palatable mare will strip in prime condition tomorrow. She has not raced since the New Zealand Cup but rarely fails to produce a bold showing fresh over ground. Beks (Jocelyn Fallen) bowled over 1600 m with Torchstar (Williams), the

pair running 1400 m in 1:32.4 and the last 600 m in 40s a time Beks could have improved upon. Her condition is hard to fault. New Wine (Chris Johnson) was another Stakes runner to work, going over 1400 m quietly with Great Zeal (Kelvin Pugh), the closing 800 m in 53.5. Michael Mein cannot make the weight for New Wine tomorrow and the ride goes to Jackie Jamieson with Mein on Some Bird. New Wine’s stablemate, Morning Wings, was given a more searching task going a solo 1400 m in 1:31.3, the closing 600 m in 38.85. At her best she would be too smart for most in the Dallington. Mr Magoo (Kerr) enhanced his Halswell Handicap chances by a smart gallop with Langcliffe (Quayle), the 100 m coming up in 1:4.3 and the last 600 m in 37.45. Pilot Light (lightweight) produced one of the fastest gallops of the session beating Rakau Tiffany over 600 m in 36.25. Notable solo gallops came from Ysatis (Woledge) with a 1200 m gallop on 1:19.6 at an even clip; Shirley’s Pal (Biddulph) which beat the good track worker Pick a Lord (Canning) over simi-

lar territory in 1:19, the last 600 m in 38.15; and Sound King, one of the few workers on the grass, which was hard held after 800 m in 49.85, the last 600 m in 35.95. The plough,on which most of the work was held, was well watered and did not produce lightning fast times.

Other work included: Biko (Johnson) solo 600 m in 39.6 - Beechwood Beauty (Tanya Wilson) solo 800 m in 49.7 s last 600 m in 36.25; Punch (Jackson) and Kowhai Groom (Walters) 800 m in 53.85, last 600 m in 38.45; Hurtinui (Falvey) and Man of Honour (Reid) 800 m on terms in 51.55; Hamblin (Thomas) 800 m in 51.45; Peach Melba (Woledge) 600 m in 38.65; Romantic Beauty and Southern Clipper 600 m in 38.25; Alberjon (Tullet), More Notes (Cameron) and Shari Lad (Prendergast) 1000 m in 1:3.1, last 600 m in 38s, More Notes showing out; Kuz (Aitkenhead) 1000 m in 1:7.1, last 600 m in 37.35; Delphiniums Blue (Kerr), 600 m in 37.35; Ruff (Johnson) 1200 m, last

600 m in 40s; Alicia (Quayle) shading Meiow (Aitkenhead) 800 m in 51.85; Dixie Kid (Jackson) and Southern Mac (Walters) 600 m together in 38s; Tide Mark (Kerr) and Advocate (Davison) 800 m on terms in 52.85; You Rang Sir clear of Aussie Bound, 600 m in 38.6; Classic Era (Quayle) shading Ongley (Kenny) 600 m in 37.85; Telerosa (Aitkenhead) 600 m in 37.35; Spangles (Kerr) and Grandee (Cameron) 600 m in 40s (last 200 m in 11.6 s); Decree Nisi (Mein) solo 800 m in 52.15, last 600 m in 38.55.
