Broker staff register
Nineteen people from stockbroking firms have registered with the Labour Department in Wellington in the hope of finding work in recemt weeks, according to the department’s assistant district superintendent, Mr Malcolm Brown. That compares with the six former staff of stockbroking firms who registered with the department in November, shortly after the crash. Mr Brown said he did not have figures covering recent days, but he believed the increasing trend would continue. Of the 19, 15 were men and 4 were women. Their ages were unknown. Though they were regis-
tered as unemployed, Mr Brown said it was not clear whether all were being paid the dole. Employment agencies say the future looks grim for some staff being jettisoned from stockbroking firms after the sharemarket crash. Representatives of several Wellington executive employment agencies say they have noticed a significant increase in the number of job applications from former employees of stockbroking firms in the last few weeks. One employment consultant said he had received calls from prospective job seekers since the announcement on Wednesday that the stockbroking firm, MB Sharebrok-
ers was in financial difficulMB laid off 22 of its staff in November after losing about $250,000 in the crash. Management Resources consultant, Mr Peter McLaren, said his firrm had not had a great influx of calls since the October crash, but the job inquiries had been steady. Mr McLaren said that senior executives and highly qualified staff from the sharebroking firms would have few problems finding new jobs, but that it would be the younger sharebroking staff and those lower down the scale who might strike trouble.
