Picton by rail
Sir, —I would like to express my appreciation of the Picton rail service. On Monday, January 18, I travelled to that northern port and back on N.Z. Rail’s special day excursion fare, my fourth such journey in as many years. As usual, the train was comfortable and well insulated against the cold, blustery and often showery weather. It was a very enjoyable ride, with the marvellous hill and coastal scenery making it well worth while. We got to Picton early, beating a competing bus, and set down about 100 passengers, some of them American tourists off to Wellington on the Searail ferry. Another hundred people came on board for the run to Christchurch, and we picked up more on the way (long-distance cyclists, etc.) at back-country stations. N.Z. Rail does a fine job.—Yours, etc., FRANK J. ROWLANDS. January 20, 1988.
