Lucky rescue for boys in surf
Two boys, aged about nine, may owe their lives to a passer-by who notified surf life-savers that the pair were in trouble about 80m off South Brighton late yesterday afternoon. Mr Geoff Barry, the coordinator of the Canterbury Regional Lifeguard Squad said the life-savers on duty at the beach would not have known the boys were in difficulty because they were well outside the marked area. “They had got caught in a rip in the outgoing tide,” he said. “It is probably one of the most dramatic rescues we have made this season,” Mr Barry said.
