Bill investigation sought by teachers

A Royal Commission should investigate theState Sector Bill, says the president of the PostPrimary Teachers’ Association, Mr Peter Allen. Changes of the magnitude proposed in the bill — such as the political appointment of State department heads — had normally been considered by a Royal Commission, Mr Allen said. The bill’s effects would be felt in education, because it proposed a transfer of responsibilities of some Education Department functions to the State Services Commission, he said. Discipline, classification and registration of teachers would be some of the functions transfer-

ring to the commission. The Education Department was the one which had expertise and knowledge in education, Mr Allen said. He called for the bill to be withdrawn and put to a Royal Commission.
