Teachers’ pay talks continue

Secondary school teachers will continue pay negotiations next Wednesday. Teachers had held stopwork meetings late last year and threatened strike action over proposals put forward which would radically change teachers’ conditions of employment. School principals would have greater powers, allowing them to set teachers’ pay according to performance and subjects taught. The Post-Primary Teachers’ Association had walked out of negotiations

last year because of the proposals. The president of the P.P.T.A., Mr Peter Allen, had said then that the teachers would return to the negotiating table only if the committee indicated a willingness to remove the proposal to restructure school management. Neither of the parties would say yesterday whether the proposals had been altered or removed. Mr Allen said only that the P.P.T.A. remained “adamantly” opposed to devolving power to principals.
