Prisons
Sir,—Recently there has been a shortage of space in prisons. This is not new. Successive Governments have refused to commit taxpayers’ money in this area. How can judges sentence people when in the back of their minds they know that there is no room in the prisons? Judges have been given a job to do. Why not give them the tools to do the job? Prisons are built out of blocks of stone. New Zealand has an abundance of rocks and stones. New Zealand has an over-abund-ance of prisoners. AU prisoners should finish their term of confinement with a job skill. This could easily include the trades of stonemasonry and block-laying. — Yours, etc., R. SULIMAROGACZEWSKI. January 25, 1988.
