Sir, —Neil T. Armstrong (January 25) says that the Canterbury United Council clean air campaign has been “totally contradicted” by the August 1987 Health Department’s report on air pollution. The report said: “... morbidity effects were quite likely during the 1960 s and early 19705” and it is likely during the 1950 s that “mortality and certainly morbidity effects were present." The 30-page report has to be read in its entirety. Incidentally, Dr J. McLeod, a specialist in respiratory illness, was reported (“Mid-Week Mail,” August 25, 1987) as stating that “my patients say smog drives them crazy” and “this is smog here and it is certainly harmful.” — Yours, etc., PATRICK NEARY. January 26, 1988.
